Description

The aim of the project is to support independent investigative journalism in the City of Lublin. The problem we are responding to is the crisis in the local media market which has been going on for several months. In one local newspaper, three journalists were immediately dismissed after a change of ownership, and another announced the closure of the print version. There are also signs of censorship being applied to material unfavourable to the government. As part of the project, we have employed one dosmissed person in order to monitor the activities of the local authorities. On the jawnylublin.pl portal, we publish material that can no longer appear in other local media due to censorship. They concern, among other things: the rationality of spending public funds, irregularities in offices, controversies related to development investments and their impact on the environment, and the misuse of public resources for the purpose of the election campaign. A component of the project is the monitoring of the pre-campaign and the 2023 parliamentary election campaign. In addition, we are conducting a fundraising campaign and carrying out workshops for citizen journalists. The implementation of the project will contribute to the strengthening of independent local journalism by attracting regular, non-grant support for the jawnylublin.pl portal.

Summary of project results

The aim of the project was to support independent investigative journalism in Lublin by employing a journalist and collaborators of the jawnylublin.pl portal. The journalists'' task was to write journalistic texts about issues important to residents, keep an eye on politicians, and monitor the election campaign.

We wrote 120 journalistic texts, conducted two journalistic workshops, and monitored the pre-campaign and election campaign.

The project contributed to the development of the independent investigative journalism portal jawnylublin.pl. People who contacted us highly appreciated the actions we took. One of our articles won the main prize in the reportage category in the Local Press 2023 competition, and the portal itself won the main prize in the Local e-Journalism Awards 2023 competition.
