Description

In our project we deal with discrimination against ethnic minorities, and in particular against the Roma minority in the Cracow City. While preparing the project, we used data from the report: ‘Survey on the nature and scale of unreported hate crimes against members of selected communities in Poland’, as well as our own experiences from the ‘Welcome to the land where the Gypsy dies’ project dedicated to the situation of the Roma minority in the Cracow. The project will be carried out between November 2021 and June 2022. As part of the project, we will organize an exhibition of works of art together with side events aimed at raising the Cracow residents’ awareness of the difficulties encountered by people of different ethnic and national origin, and in particular about hate speech. We will carry out educational activities for Polish-Roma youth, in order to enrich their sensitivity, exchange experiences, and provide knowledge and tools to facilitate conscious perception of young people’s identity, including hybrid cultural identity. The beneficiaries of the project are: representatives of the Roma minorities from the Cracow City and its surroundings, Polish-Roma youth and interested Cracow inhabitants.

Summary of project results

In the 2018 publication of the Ombudsman "Investigation of the nature and scale of unreported hate crimes against members of selected communities in Poland", we read that the most common perceived reason for discrimination in Poland is ethnic origin and nationality - this reason was indicated by as many as 49%! Due to the fact that the foundation operates mainly in Krakow and in the years 2018-2020 it implemented a project devoted to the difficulties of the Roma minority in Poland, it was decided to link this project with discrimination of ethnic and national minorities. In this context, we were particularly interested in exclusion and discrimination, but also in the role of hybrid identities in shaping civil society. The aim of the project was to create an educational program dedicated to minorities, with particular emphasis on Polish-Roma youth, and an exhibition accompanied by a number of educational events.

In cooperation with the Towards Dialogue Foundation, we have prepared a series of integration workshops on the border between ethics and aesthetics, addressed to both Polish and Polish Roma youth, with particular emphasis on representatives of ethnic and national minorities. The educational program involved 137 participants. Project "The Clouds"  is also an exhibition prepared by Ania Batko together with 8 artists, which was visited by 383 people during one month. Our exhibition was written about by, among others: Radio Kraków, KubaParis, Artmirror, Magazyn Szum, NOTES.NA.6.TYGODNI, Easttopics. What will remain after the project will be press materials, photographic documentation, and texts accompanying the exhibition in three languages (Polish, Ukrainian, English).

We organized an exhibition of artists'' works along with tow events and a series of workshops

1. Some of the works used during the exhibition (action 1) were created especially for this occasion. They constitute the hard result of the project and can be used in subsequent projects of the Henryk Foundation, as well as in the activities of other entities.

2. The instructors provided the Henryk Foundation with materials (notes, working lesson plans) that they had developed for the classes conducted under this project (action 2). These materials will be used in the grantee''s subsequent projects.
3. The implementation of this project has enriched the experience of the Henryk Foundation in carrying out educational and artistic projects with strong social involvement, which will, I hope, contribute to obtaining financing for further projects of this type.
