Description

The project will contribute to inform the public and the country’s institutions about the fight against human trafficking in Greece and in particular it will focus on information activities and action for awakening and raising public awareness on human trafficking issues and more broadly human rights issues.

To tackle the problem of human trafficking, a TV and radio spot will be set up to promote the 1109 Human Trafficking Information Line, where viewers will be able to call anonymously 24 hours a day to be informed about human trafficking or to report a suspicious incident. The spots will be broadcast on all local and national television channels and radio stations. Utilizing material and images from the relevant TV spot, posters with information in Greek and English will be designed for the indications of trafficking and for the possibility of reporting a suspicious incident. It is also worth noting that for the calls that will be received within the 18 months of the project, a written report will be published on the incidents handled by the Information Line for Human Trafficking 1109.

Also, 6 awareness actions will be conducted for the general public in Athens, Thessaloniki, Alexandroupoli, Lesvos, Ioannina, Patra, Rhodes which will be conducted in the form of information events lasting 1.5 hours. The events will be accessible to all citizens regardless of their educational or socio-economic level. In addition, 8 educational seminars will be held in 8 cities (Athens, Thessaloniki, Patra, Alexandroupoli, Rhodes, Chania, Ioannina, Lesvos) lasting 4 hours for first-line professionals who come in contact with potential victims of trafficking.

After the completion of the project, both those who are directly involved and the general public will be sensitized and informed about human trafficking, while the actions will strengthen the combat of the problem. The project will be implemented by A21 while the cooperation with a partner was not considered necessary.

Summary of project results

The project "Awareness-raising actions on human trafficking" aimed to contribute to informing the public and the country''s stakeholders about the fight against human trafficking in Greece. More specifically, it focused on information, awakening and awareness-raising actions for citizens on human trafficking issues and, by extension, human rights issues, as human trafficking is a crime that violates basic human rights.

As part of the project, a TV and radio spot was created promoting the 1109 Hotline for Combating Human Trafficking. These spots are broadcast at different times on a targeted basis on all TV channels and radio stations, both national and local. This action aims to inform the general public about the problem of human trafficking and where to turn directly. In addition to the production of the TV spot, printed information material (posters, leaflets) was produced and distributed to authorities, services, institutions and organizations in the 8 cities where actions were conducted. In the 8 cities, professionals were trained in institutions that the public would most likely turn to in case of a suspected case of human trafficking or if they might come across a person who is a potential victim of human trafficking and were trained to be able to identify and manage such a potential case.

In Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Rhodes, Chania, Ioannina, Mytilene and Alexandroupoli, 9 events took place where 1935 people were informed, 12 trainings where 251 professionals were trained. Through the promotion of these events and trainings through social media 128.121 social media users were informed and they created 5775 reactions through that. Additionally 22 articles and news feeds were produced from local press and news shows of local tv stations. In each city, Project Promoter cooperated with different local actors such as municipalities and their social services, counseling centers for women and safe houses, and even with the directorates of primary and secondary level of education. As the project was reaching to its end, an Evaluation Report was created and forwarded to all the actors, authorities and organizations that Project Promoter cooperated with. The events that took place, the contacts, the cooperations because of this project continue even today to operate and produce more informational and awareness events as also reports of possible trafficking incidents that reach to the 1109 hotline.
