Description

The project will focus on rainwater harvesting, recycling and reuse. It will involve children, parents, local communities and the general public, with the objective to increase public environmental awareness in adaptation to climate change issues. The project will focus on increasing the volume of reused rainwater and increasing children's knowledge of climate change adaptation measures. The curricula focused on management of rainwater and climatic changes will be modified for the school education programme and educational activities focused on environment will be organised. Children, students and the civil services are expected to benefit from the project. International Development Norway will participate in the project preparation and its coordination in every stage of the process. Through the planned coordination as well as exchange of experience and knowledge it will be considerable expert improvement in the readiness of the whole project team in the field of material selection and its practice.

Summary of project results

The project is a response to the observed climate changes in the Slovak landscape - unexpected floods, followed by big droughts and an increased lack of drinking water. The project focused on realization of practical steps to capture rainwater in selected school campuses and is a practical illustration for the pupils and the public in environmental education. The project involved a broad range of stakeholders, from pupils and teachers to parents and the local communities. The rainwater is captured from the buildings' firm surfaces and roofs and percolates into the rain lakes. There are planted herbs in the rain lakes and permeable paths enable soaking the rainwater. The planted trees and herbs have increased green vegetation on campus as well as the transfer of water in system: soil- herb- atmosphere. An added benefit of the project is the creation of a relaxing zone for the pupils and a natural classroom for practical learning.

Summary of bilateral results

The cooperation with International Development Norway as a donor project partner was very good and taught us how to face several implications from climate change, use rain water and raise awareness. We find the cooperation to be successful and definitely recommend to have a donor project partner for other project promoters in the future. Both our school and Development Norway shared results, knowledge and strengthened cooperation.
