Description

Project “Green Mission: Climate” aim is to educate, inform and promote Latvian pupils’ and educational staff’s awareness and knowledge of climate change by using and integrating alternative educational approaches and methods into the project activities. Wider and deeper understanding of climate change is also the key target result of the project. Direct target groups of the project are Latvian high school students, teachers of natural sciences, Latvian educational institutions and municipal education departments. Indirect target groups are society in wider sense, other different youth and educational organisations as well as families and friends of direct target groups. The project will help to educate and inform youth by organizing interdisciplinary technical and practical workshops in schools as well as by providing field trips to science centre in which with a help of several interactive expositions a special gallery of climate change will be created. A wide range of publicity activities will be implemented. Project includes activities that ensure project result sustainability.

Summary of project results

Society and especially youth lack true understanding and knowledge of issues regarding climate change; this delays adaption of positive changes and green thinking to society’s opinions and actions. The objective of the project was to educate, inform and promote awareness and knowledge of climate change of Latvian secondary school students, natural sciences teachers, and education departments by using and integrating alternative educational approaches and methods into the project activities. Within the project, technically creative workshops for students, field trips to the science centre, as with the help of various interactive expos, a special climate change gallery was created. In addition, educational seminars for science teachers was organised. In order to achieve the planned results technically creative workshops on mitigation of the climate change, progress of low carbon development and adaptation to climate change for at least 30463 students in Latvian general educational institutions was organised. Workshops took place in 70 schools in all five regions of Latvia. Methodical material of scientific and technical experiments (including practical and interdisciplinary) was developed, the material will help students during classes, printed copies are provided to educators and 80 departments of education in Latvia. To provide consistent and long-term public educational and informative platform, and place that educates and informs target audience on mitigation of the climate change during the project and after completion of the project, the capacity and resources of the Science Centre Kurzeme Demo Centre was supplemented with 18 interactive stands.

Summary of bilateral results

Project Norwegian partner "International Development Norway AS" (IDN) has a rich experience in implementing various projects, which are related to environmental and climate issues, as well as organising activities for youth, educational workers and society. During the project, knowledge and capacity of involved partners was increased. Continuing experience exchange and cooperation, as well as integrating and using alternative educational approaches and methods, was provided. During the visit in Latvia, the project partners discussed possibilities of long-term future cooperation in the city scale, as well as expanded professional network between Latvian and Norwegian institutions.
