Description

Lack of education and poverty are major problems for the people residing in Dolhesti Commune. With a total population of 2,638 people, Dolhesti Commune counts 559 people belonging to the Roma population. The objective of the project is to increase access to preschool education and improve school attendance for Roma children, through setting up a day care center for preschoolers. The project will involve 56 children, most of which are Roma, in creating the necessary conditions for educational integration. Moreover, the project will facilitate access to the labour market for 68 youth through employment advisory services, information, work mediation and increasing the level of awareness regarding the necessity of education for 40 parents. The project will address these challenges by creating conditions for Roma children to have access to education, after-school activities, promoting social-professional integration for youth at risk and increasing awareness of parents about the importance of education.

Summary of project results

The project aimed to promote social inclusion and to improve the educational and social situation of children and young people from Dolhesti by implementation of integrative measures. The project direct beneficiaries were children ages 3-15, parents/tutors, young people and specialists. The project was implemented in the partnership with Association for Social Program Development and this partnership proved to be efficient and the collaboration between the two entities continue after the project end. In order to enhance the impact of the project, the promotor had received additional funds through PLUS and the promotor had implemented supplementary activities. The promotor open a day care center for preschool children and selected a number of 30 children who participated to the specific activities. Parallel with this, the promotor developed after school programs for 40 children in the risk situation aged 6-15 years and the direct beneficiaries increased their school attendance. All the selected specialists working in the centers were trained and they were involved in providing the following services: after school program, cultural/recreational services, life skills trainings and physiological therapy. Due to the intensive information campaign conducted by the project promotor within community, the number of direct beneficiaries benefited of the services was achieved. The parents/tutors of the children were also implicated in counseling and therapy program. The children and parents participated to six trips in Moldova region. For young people, the promotor had special programs, a number of 58 persons was trained and certificated in qualifications such as carpenter and worker in knitwear. All indicators have been reached such as 86 children involved in pre-school activities and after school program, 102 young people receiving vocational orientation, 60 parents/tutors participated in parenting classes.
