Description

The project promotes social cohesion by implementing integrated efficient and effective measures targeting vulnerable children who are at risk of school dropout, have dropped out from school or never attended school, with a view to promote their social inclusion. The activities will be implemented in four centres for inclusive education based in Bucharest, Lupeni (Hunedoara County), Targoviste (Dambovita County) and Timisoara (Timis County). The centres will provide integrated assistance for 308 children aged 4-15 through three educational programs (summer kindergartens, school after school, second chance) and for 185 parents/legal guardians, including referral to complementary services. Within the project, 28 specialists (social workers/psychologists and teachers) and volunteers will be trained and information and awareness raising sessions and local campaigns will be carried out for 2,000 children, teachers and community members where the project is implemented.

Summary of project results

The project aimed to improve the situation of vulnerable children who are at risk of school dropout, have dropped out from school or never attended school in order to achieve their social inclusion. The project started in 4 different areas of the country, Bucharest, Târgoviște (Dâmbovița county), Timișoara (Timiș county) and Lupeni (Hunedoara county) and after the PLUS call, the project activities were replicated in two more areas, Prejmer (Brașov county) and Petrila (Hunedoara county). The project achieved it`s objectives by developing activities with 555 children in 6 educational centers set out in the locations mentioned above, properly equipped with furniture, IT equipment and teaching materials. During the implementation period, there were implemented 3 educational programs for children: Summer Kindergartens (for children who never attended Kindergarten and will enter for the first time in the educational system), School after School (for children with high risk of school dropout or with low school attendance) and The Second Chance (for children who abandoned the educational system). Also the project has a component for the communities by training 26 mediators and member of the Roma communities to obtain qualifications as Roma school mediators, in order to facilitate Roma children access to education and to help replicate the project results. Although the Project Promoter designed the activities for 508 children, in the end 555 children improved their educational and social skills, as follows: 169 children benefited from the services of Summer Kindergarten program, 334 children benefited from services within the School after School program, 52 children benefited from services as part of The Second Chance program. And as a reward 120 children participated to a thematic summer camp organized in Brașov area. Within the project there were provided social and psychological assistance for 143 children and their families in order to implicate parents in children`s education and to monitor their behavioral evolution. 2044 children, members of the teaching staff and of the communities participated in information and awareness sessions concerning the children’s right to education. The Project Promoter carried out a media campaign at national level raising awareness about school dropout and scholar reintegration of children who left the educational system, 500.000 persons were informed.
