Description

Non-collection of the used cooking oil severely affects aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in Romania. The main objective of the project is to decrease the quantity of the used cooking oil disposed in the sewage system of Bucharest and to increase the number of people that understand the importance of the collection of this type of oil. There will be organized educational campaigns and collection campaigns for the inhabitants of Bucharest and the representatives of restaurants. The project beneficiaries are pupils, parents, teachers and representatives of hotels and restaurants. More than 3,500 citizens will be involved in environmental education and collection campaigns and will be collected 6 tons of used cooking oil from Bucharest residents.

Summary of project results

In Romania, most of the population does not consider used cooking oil as waste. The main objective of this project was to inform people about the harmful effects of throwing used cooking oil in the sink and to present the advantages of collecting it. Also, the project promotes a green way of transport by using the cargo bicycle in the city while collecting the used oil. The project was promoted through school presentations, information campaigns held in city parks, branding the cargo bicycles, spreading posters, flyers and by increasing the number of contracts with the HoReCa segment. The project was presented in 6 schools of Bucharest, 2,000 pupils, teachers and parents being informed about the harmful effects of throwing the used cooking oil in the sink and the advantages of collecting it. Following the presentations collecting programmes were organised in 4 of the 6 schools. The information campaign continued in 3 city parks, where posters and flyers of the project were distributed to the people and children had the occasion to ride the cargo bikes. During the campaigns the association was helped by volunteers. The main outcome of the project is the increased contribution of the population to sustainable development by collecting the used cooking oil, a waste that clogs the pipes and pollutes the water and soil. During the implementation of the project, 4.5 tonnes of used cooking oil were collected from households and 3.5 tonnes from restaurants. The collecting of used oil from the households was done after filling in a form on the promoter’s web page (1,800 people filled in the request). At the same time, 36 contracts for collecting oil were signed with restaurants. S.T.U.P. (Social Trading Urban Place) Association managed through the implementation of the project to create one of the most appreciated environment brands in Bucharest, the next step being the launch of the project in Iasi city.
