Description

With the goal of promoting inclusion of children at risk, to whom books and other resources are scarce, a library of digital books will be created with subjects related to Citizenship, such as the value of democracy and civic participation, defence of minority rights and gender equality, fight against discrimination and social inequalities, fight against racism, xenophobia and hate speech, among others. A library composed of 15 volumes will be created for children of three age groups (aged 5 to 7, 8 to 11 and 12 to 15), and advertised through schools and social networks. A member club will be created in order to promote writing and reflection on the issues covered. Aiming to project the Portuguese language as a means to pass on humanistic values, the project aims at extending the partnership to other NGOs involved in similar projects.

Summary of project results

Portuguese schools are multicultural communities, with many children belonging to ethnic minorities, immigrants or Roma people, and the development of projects aimed at social inclusion is essential, for which books and other resources are lacking. Children and youngsters are very much attracted by digital support instruments and interactive reading. A library of digital books on citizenship is an instrument promoting social cohesion and citizenship culture. The achievement of this project was to create an on-line library composed of 15 books in Portuguese language dealing with citizenship issues like tolerance and intercultural understanding (7 books), gender equality and violence (3 books), anti-semitism (2 books), Roma people (2 books) and traffic of human beings (1 book). The books are intended and organized by age classes from 5 to 15 year old children. The project has reached its objectives and targets (number of books) in order to promote the Portuguese language and citizenship values. The site where books can be read had already been visited 7 723 times by the end of the project, by which time the Facebook page counted 117 740 visitors and 2.691 followers. The tutorial videos uploaded on You Tube got 411 visits. During the implementation phase most of the visitors were parents and school teachers; but it is expected that an increasing number of children will use it in the future.
