Description

The mortality rate by cardiovascular diseases is very high in Lwówek Sląski area. Facing this problem, local government decided to implement a project dedicated to young adults and people aged 30+. The aim of the project is to improve the availability of health services, as well as to raise the awareness on how to counteract cardiovascular diseases among locals. There are only soft measures planned under the project. Its goal will be achieved through the following actions: I. health promotion programmes in local community (1590 participants in total, 6 promotional events) II. disease prevention programme in local community (7.078 participants in total, 25.440 examinations i.a. GP consultations, blood pressure, dietetic consultations, ECG).

Summary of project results

Facing increasing mortality rate, caused by cardiovascular diseases in Lower Silesia, the authorithies of Lwówek Ślaski imlpemented a project financed by norway grants, adressed to youth and people aged 30+. The aim of the project was to improve the availability of health services and to raise the awareness on preventing cardiovascular diseases. Medical part of the project was conducted by Poviat Health Center in Lwówek, an entity which is subjected to the Project Promoter. There were 8.138 locals who participated in screening (vs target value:7.078), of which around 65% has been referred to nutricionist and subjected to more comprehensive exams. Health promotion activities consisted in organizing 11 events that brought attention of the community to health problems. They were attended by 2.204 people (vs target value: 1.590). Prior to starting these events, press and radio promotional campaigns were organized together with distrubution of leaflets and posters. Among direct benefits of this project the following can be listed: a) increasing detection rate of cardiovascular diseases in Lwówek b) elaborating of evidence based diagnosis of local community, which can be used for health promotion/prophylaxis planning in the future c) increasing of awareness on health problems among local society i.a impact of healthy dieting, smoking tobacco, physical activity, stress or alcohol consumption. In a long run, actions conducted in the project will bring further effects in reduction of medical interventions and mortality rate.
