Description

Czech nature is rich and diverse but there is a list of endangered species. Guidance is framed in documents giving basic information and instructions how to treat the most endangered species. Such a document, usually for a species, less often for a group, is called an “action plan”. An action plan is suitable for a limited group of species meeting the requirements. For some species it is necessary to decide first if they are appropriate or not. New information is needed. Rusty bogrush (Schoenus ferrugineus), rusty bogrush (S. nigricans), alpine asphodel (Tofieldia calyculata) and fleawort (Tephroseris aurantiaca) are specially protected species therefore expert documents for a decision on the need to prepare their action plans were recommended in the Czech conception document. The project meets the target of the state environmental policy of the Czech Republic for 2012-2020. The main objective of the project is creation of expert document as necessary basis for nature-conservation authorities to begin active protection of four plant species. The project aims to check the status of populations for rusty bogrush and alpine asphodel. For fleawort and alpine asphodel it is study of generative reproduction and for bogrushs study of interspecies hybridization. The project outcomes are improving knowledge of four plant species occurrence and preparation of the expert documents. The majority of the project measures consists of field research and finding abiotic and biotic characteristics of localities leading to precise and complex compilation of expert document. The project outputs are collecting of data about status of populations of rusty bogrush and alpine asphodel and results of specific studies of species reproduction. Project will also include a publicity part. The target group of the project is primarily Ministry of the Environment and agencies. Secondarily, protection and connected activities will carry out the awareness-raising in the general public via education.

Summary of project results

This project addresses the issue of the suitability of the inclusion of selected endangered plant species among the applicants for the development of a rescue program. Of the selected wider circle of candidates for which there is not enough information to make an immediate decision on whether to launch a rescue program, 4 species have been dealt with in this grant: Rusty Bogrush and Black Bogrush, Alpine Asphodel and Fleawort. The research of the Rusty Bogrush and Black Bogrush has brought to date the most complete results of this genus in the Czech Republic. We know precisely, in the case of large populations, the approximate numbers of thorns in the localities, we know the state of vegetation and the soil in their places of occurrence. At two locations, probes are installed to allow long-term monitoring of water dynamics, and these data are usable for the entire spectrum of organisms in those nature reserve. There is no reason for more intense intervention in favor of the species or for the preparation of a rescue program. Alpine Asphodel is beyond any doubt the currently rapidly disappearing species in the Czech Republic. The main recommendation for further care on locally occurring localities is the significant and regular development of the turf near the plants. One of the most important measures for Fleawort is the fencing of at least one subpopulation in order to protect it from the taste and have the ability to ripen the seeds. In combination with the disappearing populations of T. integrrifolia in Moravia, these two species are suitable adherents for building a rescue program. All the results of the project are summarized in a comprehensive final report.
