Description

This project aims at improving public health and reducing health inequalities between user groups. This will be accomplished by the provision of increased access to registry services and through upgrading the infrastructure and operating capacity of the Cyprus Bone Marrow Donor Registry. Outputs: educational publicity campaign to build awareness and improved access to all patient groups in Cyprus and abroad; recruitment of 2000 donors from both communities; an integrated management and communication system enhancing collaboration with other international registries; establishment of new advanced solutions for more effective and accurate matching of donors and patients; strengthen/establish bilateral relations with institutions in Donor state. Target groups are the 2 communities in Cyprus, young people under 30 who are the ideal new donor recruits.

Summary of project results

The project was needed in order to enhance access to registry services and also to improve public health and reduce health inequalities and to create public awareness and attract more donor and supporters to ensure sustainability. We improved the technical and operational infrastructure of the Registry, we upgraded and updated bi communal and local data, hired qualified personnel, engaged in new Donor Typing methodologies and NGS, and engaged in public awareness campaigns. Typed more than 30.000 new donors as opposed to 2.000. We updated all Turkish Cypriot data (over 20.000 donors), translated all donor recruitment documentation in Turkish and English, introduced new multi-lingual web page, Secured alliance with other European Registries and achieved better rates for donor typing through GEMS (Group of European Medium Size registries), Linked to 28 registries around the world through common information platform. We created public awareness, improved the Foundations public image and introduced new logo and colours and attracted corporate partnerships (consistent supporters)
