Description

The project addresses the applicant’s shortage of human resources for field research and folklore recording. The project aims at promoting volunteering, recruiting and training volunteers. First, 10 volunteers and 10 informants in 3 villages in Targovishte District will be selected. Second, the 10 volunteers will undergo training in the form of lectures on the principles of volunteering, volunteers’ rights and working with the informants, collecting and recording folklore. Third, the volunteers will visit the 3 villages and collect and record Bulgarian traditions, customs, crafts and rituals of the 3 communities: Bulgarians, Turks and the Roma. Next, 6 volunteers will learn traditional crafts. The project will benefit not only the applicant but also the local communities in the 3 villages, preserving and handing down authentic folklore and crafts the generations. The partner will coordinate work with local community schools, volunteers and informants.

Summary of project results

11 volunteers were trained in the crafts of whittlery, basket weaving and embroidery as well as in the methodology of collecting and researching traditions, customs and crafts. 40 field materials about customs and traditions were collected and recorded. The crafts mastered were presented in four multimedia presentations. The trained volunteers managed to offset the lack of researchers doing field research as well as the staff involved in the future activities of the organization and the community centres implementing similar activities: training of volunteers and revival of forgotten crafts.
