Description

The City of Gdansk and 33 local communities around it with an aggregate population of up to 1.3 million form the ‘Gdansk Metropolitan Area’ since 2011. Under the EEA Grants project the ‘Gdansk Metropolitan Area’ in cooperation with employers’ associations, culture institutions, business, universities, regional organisations and education institutions will work on the development of a coherent strategy for the development of the area. This will include information and promotion activities, socio-economic analyses, development of the strategy for the ‘Gdansk Metropolitan Area’ and Spatial Development Concepts until 2030 as well as trainings and publications. The project will benefit the long term development of the largest and most dynamically developing metropolis in northern Poland.

Summary of project results

Due to the fact that the General Meeting of the OMG-G-S Members adopted the OMG-G-S Strategy until 2030 (main product of the project), based on a complex diagnosis of the social and economic situation, the Association possesses a document that, within the next decade or so, will determine development directions for the metropolis and cooperation between the partners. In the context of spatial development of the area, the 2030 Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot Metropolitan Area Spatial Organization Plan, drawn up with the use of an expert opinion prepared as part of the INTIS project, concerning the availability of investment areas and the prospects for housing development in the OMG-G-S, is equally important. The fact that the OMG-G-S, as the first metropolis in the country, currently possesses a complex document package, demonstrates the new quality of metropolitan cooperation. Apart from the OMG-G-S Strategy until 2030, these documents are: the Integrated Territorial Investments Strategy, Transport and Mobility Strategy, and the Low-emission Economy Programme. The indicated planning documents, which include a broad range of subjects, ensure that many stakeholders are engaged in their implementation and the development of further undertakings on the metropolitan scale. Diversification of forms of meetings with local government representatives on the implementation of the OMG-G-S Strategy allowed to reach both the mayors and presidents of the local government and the officials of different levels, employees of the organizational units and councilors. As a result, information on the benefits of metropolitan cooperation could translate into improved cooperation mechanisms. In everyday contacts with self-government units OMG-G-S one can see that the work done during the preparation of the Strategy has made it easier and easier for current activities. As a result of consultancy for JST OMG-G-S, 10 partnerships were made, consisting not only of local government but also of non-governmental organizations.
