The project offers direct support to people at risk of hate-motivated violence. We monitor and document xenophobic incidents via community-working (contact with foreigners), empowerment (providing information about legal rights), advisory centre, online form and press coverage. The collected data will be used for advocacy activities, in which we focus on emphasising the perspective of hate violence victims and potential victims. The project entails conducting a social and educational action: workshops on reacting to hate-motivated violence, publications, and making a movie promoting the campaign and the need to react to prejudice-motivated violence. This part of the project is addressed to young people, teachers, educators, policemen/-women and other people who might witness hate-motivated violence. The goal of the project is the prevention of violence motivated by prejudice and hate speech, and bringing on increased reactions to acts of aggression and intolerance in Wrocław.
Summary of project results
Nomada's (Association for Multicultural Society Integration) monitoring activities have demonstrated that in 2012 there were 71 xenophobic incidents that took place in Wrocław. In 2010 the organization has carried out research indicating that people at risk of hate violence do not have access to proper support. This type of violence also fails to be adequately mirrored in official statistics, which misrepresent the scale of the issue. Public institutions are not adequately prepared to react appropriately to the cases of this type of violence and do not offer adequate preventive measures. The intent of the project was to counteract prejudice-motivated violence in Wrocław, and to protect and support people at risk of, or experiencing, this type of violence. The activities resulted in building relations with people from communities at risk of hate violence, who were given support. Tools for further dissemination of information about possible reaction methods were prepared. Activities targeted directly at people at risk of hate violence, as well as information and education activities directed at general public were carried out. The first group of activities covered mainly community-working (CW) based on direct contact with potential clients, which allowed to reach groups and communities, as well as individuals at risk of or experiencing prejudice-motivated violence. Within CW the needs of these people were determined and answered to. Education with regards to legal protection was also covered. CW included also collection of information about prejudice-motivated incidents. On the other hand information and education activities included the delivery of 17 workshops for various groups (youth, seniors, police, minority groups leaders, educators, people susceptible to, or experiencing violence), which concentrated mainly on possible reaction methods. Educational tools, including a comic book and an information spot, were also prepared and disseminated. Beneficiaries of the project: 331 people at risk of prejudice-motivated violence and 102 people, who participated in the workshops.
