Description

Under the project, citizens together with city officials and councillors will develop the best design and planning solutions for people moving about the city with the speed less than 6 km/h in four areas: continuity of traffic, needs of different categories of users, landscape aspects, and spending time in public space. The themes will be developed together with users in the spirit of participatory designing ("design thinking"). Conclusions will lead to recommendations that will help to introduce “pedestrian standards" - a document useful in planning better solutions for pedestrians in public space. The project will be implemented with the participation of network of persons interested in the quality of public space, sustainable development and participation, and should enhance participation and better understanding, and strengthen the cooperation competencies. We would like citizens to find a common ground with city officials and authorities on the issues concerning pedestrians. Local governement is involved in a project as a partner. That makes implementing the "pedestrian standards" a realistic prospect.

Summary of project results

Lublin is a city in a "human scale" - green, with interesting historical buildings and inspiring climate. But it cannot strike a balance between big investments, growth of suburbs and dependence on car traffic and enhancement of space integration and developing infrastructure for pedestrians and bicycles. The long-term aim of the project was a sustainable development of Lublin as a pedestrian-friendly city and using collective knowledge of inhabitants in the city decision-making processes. Under the project, the Draft of Lublin Pedestrian Standards was developed through consultations that now forms a basis for the document prepared by the City Hall titled "Lublin pedestrian standards. Developmental guidelines for pedestrian traffic". The project resulted also in nominating officers responsible for pedestrian issues in the City Hall of Lublin; building a broad social coalition around pedestrian issues and participation including both inhabitants and local authorities; strengthening of groups that will monitor the implementation of pedestrian standards (Tu Obok Foundation, partners, Pedestrian Lublin, Forum and Council for Space Culture); the base of easily accessible knowledge on pedestrian issues; changes in the awareness of authorities on pedestrian needs and social dialogue. 750 persons participated in 27 consultation and education meetings for inhabitants, public officers and councillors. For a year, 4 parts of the exhibition "Through Lublin on foot! Beauty, inspirations, challenges" have been showed in libraries, offices, universities and in the city space. 13 films showed during the meetings are available on the Internet, the book "Atlas for pedestrian situations", available online, was published in 250 copies, a petition to the president of Lublin to implement pedestrian standards was signed by almost 500 persons, an Internet page was launched to sum up the knowledge and discussion on pedestrians and the quality of city space. The project partner, The Centre Brama Grodzka Teatr NN delegated its employee to cooperate in the project, and gave us place on its server, the City Public Library lent their premises and offered promotional support. The City Hall in Lublin delegated its employees to cooperate within the project, professionally and logistically supported project activities.
