Description

In the area of Wielkopolska Province there were designated 13 areas especially exposed to pollution from nitrogen compounds from agricultural sources (OSN). On the basis of conducted so far water monitoring of surface and underground there were designated general trends of level of the pollution by nitrates from agricultural sources and there was revealed the need to reduce the negative impact of the agricultural sector on the water level. The aim of the project is to achieve gradual improvement of the waters, especially to improve the water quality of small watercourses in rural areas. The results of the project in environmental and social aspects will be to improve of the quality of the environment and raise awareness and the education of farmers in environmental monitoring and control activities related to the requirements of environmental legislation in the context of the functioning of farms and their impact on the state and quality of water in areas OSN and also ensuring easier access to information on the environment by improving the visualization of geographic data through the portal. The results of the project in economic aspect will be equipping the laboratory of Voivodeship Inspectorate of Environmental Protection in Poznań, and as a result will be increased quality of its actions for environmental protection, environmental management and implementation of the principles of sustainable development through public information and administrations about the quality of the nature elements. Developing of a uniform approach to the inspection of farms in all the OSN will facilitate comparison and analysis of results inspection of farms and will help to indicate issues, which in the future should be refined. The results of the project will benefit the institutions and individuals working in rural areas, especially in areas vulnerable to pollution from nitrogen compounds from agricultural sources.

Summary of project results

The aims of the project have been achieved. Training for Voivodeship Inspectorate of Environmental Protection in Poznań staff has been carried out, which has enabled them to improve their skills in using spatial information about the environment and in particular spatial data provided for monitoring and control of the environment. Series of training sessions were held for farmers, entities using the agriculture and inspectors controlling farms, which led to increase awareness of monitoring, proper management of areas particularly exposed to nitrogen pollution from agricultural sources, and their impact on quality and condition of water and environment. The farm inspection system has been improved in areas of particular vulnerability thanks to the purchase of a new measuring and control equipment. Quality of laboratory work of VIEP was improved by implementation of developed methodology, use of new measuring equipment, purchase of specialized cars equipped with a sampling system and measuring equipment. A geographic portal has been launched to visualize information on the state of the environment, providing easier access to dissemination of environmental information. The quality of the information on condition of the environment and the results of the control activities has increased. Three publications have been produced, including guidance for farm owners in vulnerable areas and control guidelines, based on experience from the implementation of the Nitrates Directive in areas of particular vulnerability in Wielkopolskie Voivodeship.
