Description

The implementation of the educational project in the Wrocław Zoo gives the opportunity to reach all of the visitors (approximately one million people a year). The project aims to familiarize the visitors with the nature of the ongoing changes in climate in the world, which contribute to the biological imbalance and thus to the extinction of species, even local ones. One of the missions of Wrocław Zoo is to provide educational activities regarding the protection of species and breeding of the endangered species, which enables for the preservation of biological diversity. As a member of the prestigious European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), the Wrocław Zoo is obliged to participate in the educational campaign "Pole to Pole" which touches upon the subject of the climate change on the Earth's poles and their influence on the extinction of species in the world, as well as rules for energy preservation for your household, in line with the slogan "act locally, affect globally". The project will raise public awareness on the above-mentioned topics by building an innovative, interactive pavilion in the Wrocław Zoo, which will allow the guests to learn about the topic of climate change at their own pace. The visitors will have access to educational panels, interactive installations and multimedia games. The expected result is to raise public awareness on the biological diversity regarding climate change via the educational stations in the interactive pavilion that every person can visit and the participation of organized groups in the specially prepared educational workshops (20 000 people). The target group of the project constitutes all visitors of the Wrocław Zoo, both those who will attend the special workshop (at least 20 000 people) as well as those who visit the Zoo at their own accord ((approximately one million people per year). The project involves reaching organized groups in the Lower Silesian voivodeship and the neighbouring voivodeships.

Summary of project results

All activities planned within the project have been implemented, the final report has been approved. Results of implementation of the entire project: increased awareness of and education in biodiversity and ecosystem services, including awareness of and education in the linkage between biodiversity and climate change (Number of people who have participated in educational activities and promoting the conservation of biodiversity: 481 579); development of social attitudes and ecological behavior and increase public involvement in the protection of biodiversity and ecosystems. Within the project the following activities were implemented: organization of the conferences (3), seminar, educational workshops (1115), competitions (10), events (3), publication of the educational materials and the website. As part of the project, an educational multi-media pavilion "CLIMATE, ANIMALS, HUMANS" was built. It is the first pavilion without animals, but packed with multi-media: from presentations to interactive games for visitors of different ages. Through interactive play, children and youth will learn how to change their everyday habits towards becoming more eco-friendly. With the help of a special phone booth, they can connect with, among others, the people of Kiribati or Niger, and learn about the problems they have to face everyday. They will also take part in a quiz on waste sorting; they will see how the polar ice cap has changed over the last 6 decades. The idea for the pavilion was conceived by the staff of Marketing and Education at the Wrocław ZOO, out of care for the disappearing species.
