Description

Re:Baltica is striving to practice a high-quality investigative journalism that would influence political decisions. It also provides analyses of politics and other developments in society in a manner that is understandable to the public, thus encouraging the public to participate in social and political processes and decisions affecting their life's quality. Activities will be carried out in Latvia involving the other two Baltic countries. Project activities include arranging of large studies on social and economic issues in Latvia, including pan-Baltic studies and international investigative journalism conferences. Internship opportunities for 12 students (volunteers) will be provided. Seminars for journalists and public activists will be organized. The project is expected to produce articles to be printed in media and internet portals, TV stories and to provide platform for journalists to establish new contacts and networks and learn learn innovative journalism techniques.

Summary of project results

The objective of the Action plan 2013 of the foundation “Baltic Investigative Journalism Centre Re:Baltica” was to carry out high-quality investigative studies in the area of economics, health care and social issues and to improve ability of Latvian journalists to write about economic issues in order to provide high-quality information to Latvian population and contributing to involvement of wider public in social and political processes. The objective was achieved by producing 3 major articles and a documentary about “Baltic drug trafficers”; 3 articles and 2 TV news videos on working conditions on low wage earners ir Latvia; 3 articles and 2 smaller news videos and a 40 min long TV program on health issue problems in Latvia. In addition, Re:Baltica shared it’s know-how on how to write about economics with more than 15 Latvian journalists and organised the seminar for Baltic journalists on media legal protection. In all of these activities 3 students-volunteers were involved. In the future Re:Baltica will continue it’s activities by doing the same qualitative work of journalism to improve the life of society.
