Description

The project’s aim is to create a new social service that will result in an activation of people with reduced mobility. The target group of the project is people with reduced mobility. The project envisages developing a methodology for support groups for people with reduced mobility, organising regular meetings of support groups, setting up „Independent Life Training” sessions for people in the wheelchair by offering them consultations with various specialists (social worker, psychologist, sports therapist, career guidance specialist) and group classes; developing and publishing a brochure about the new social service and a brochure containing participants` reflections and feedback about the service, organising seminars for local governments, as well as making videos giving advice to people with disabilities about daily life and providing positive experiences.

Summary of project results

This project was necessary to activated people with reduced mobility in Latvia that they could become as active and knowledgeable citizens as possible so reducing their risk of social exclusion. In the project we created new social service to provide people with disabilities with the information and services that provide them understanding of their disability and facilities what they can do, what services they can get, how they can adapt environment, technical aids, medicine, etc. to make their lives easier. As well in project was: • Created a new social service design; • Developed a methodology for support groups for disabled people; • Created and published two booklets, one about the new social service and other with participants knowledge and appreciation of social service; • Made presentations seminars for municipalities about the possibility of helping people with reduced mobility, using new social service. • Created 25 videos with tips for independent living for people with disabilities and positive stories about people with disabilities and their achievements, distribute videos. Support groups were held by previously prepared methodology. Methodology we made together with partners, organization of people with disabilities and their friend “Apeirons” and Lithuanian association of people with disabilities. • Independent living trainings for people in wheelchairs. Participants had an opportunity to gain theoretical and practical knowledge on various topics that may improve and make easier their lives, so they become more independent in their lives, thereby reducing their social exclusion. In 7 days participants worked with different specialists, met various institutions and authorities representatives. Participants shared their own experience, tried different technical aids, learned how to overcome different environmental obstacles, etc.
