Description

The objective of the project is to preserve the complex of buildings of Kaunas Bernardine Monastery and the Church of St. George the Martyr, to secure its safe use and meet the needs related to cultural tourism. This late Gothic shrine is one of the five monuments, built between 1495–1510, which constitutes the original heritage of Lithuanian national architecture. In the church, it is planned to restore 17 windows which are currently non-hermetic and unsafe, to conserve facades of the eastern and western pediments, to install flooring and systems of lighting and heating for the presbytery, to restore an aperture in the central portal and install there a new door, to conserve the crypts and display them under a glass floor. In the monastery, it is foreseen to finish up sealing works, to restore the third-floor window apertures and to open bricked up doors. These works will help to reveal the splendor and beauty of this cultural heritage object. Kaunas Bernardine Monastery and the Church of St. George the Martyr offer potential in the area of public tourism and in this sense could be beneficial for small and middle-sized companies working in area. In order to raise awareness, trainings on valuable cultural heritage properties, types of maintenance and fire prevention will be organized for people from Polish and Lithuanian parishes who are in charge of Franciscan churches maintenance in the country.
