Description

The tomato processing technology of Univer Product Zrt. was established 30 years ago using the available highest technical level. The demand for high-quality condensed tomato is gradually increasing. Among the activities tomato processing generates the largest amount of waste. Increasing capacity means growing waste emission and energy use which is avoidable. As outcomes of the project, washing technology and waste transport is improved (specific water saving, decreasing waste water), refining and final refining technology is improved (waste and humidity decrease), development of a dryer and a refining waste burning facility is solved (the waste is burned as biomass within a closed technology without leaving the plant). With a use of improved assembly, 64% decrease will appear in specific packaging material use. The considerable waste emission reduction is implemented on the total technology line and also energy efficiency increases. This project’s benefits will be shown in the whole region, as considerably better energy efficiency can be achieved by the environmentally friendly innovative improvements.

Summary of project results

The tomato processing technology of Univer Product Zrt. was established 30 years ago using the available highest technical level. At the beginning of the project the capacity was 1000 t/day related to the full season, it was capable of processing 25.000 t of tomato. As a result of the project, due to the new technology introduced the processing capacity increased to 2000 t/day increasing the processing volume related to the full season to 50.000 t/year. On the long term, by expanding the season the production line may even be capable of processing 100.000 tons of raw tomato. On the other hand the new technology is amended by a biomass boiler using the byproducts of the tomato processing. Outputs delivered: • Making the existing technology environment-friendly, upgrading • Increasing energy efficiency • Significantly decreasing the amount of waste and green-house gas emission. The Norwegian partner took part in the R&D activity relating to the development of the most efficient technology.

Summary of bilateral results

The project promoter among others intended to utilize tomato triturating waste in biomass boiler. For increasing the efficiency of the technology, a drying device was established which operates by flue gas heat. As a partner in the project, the TC Group AS prepared the energy balance of the biomass heating system and the triturating waste drying equipment. The project partner was responsible for the sizing of the necessary heat exchange equipment. The role of the Norwegian partner was essential for the achievemnts of the project.
