Description

Segregation of Roma children is widespread in Hungary,desegregation is based on either a court decision or a political will,no example for widespread local civil support of integration.CFCF will build the capacity of 4 local communities consisting of Roma and non Roma parents who are willing to speak up and enforce their rights through community actions (transferring to integrated schools,petition for school bus)or with the help of a probono lawyer launch lawsuits against segregation.The objective is to develop a model program and disseminate it among NGOs and to increase the number of Roma students taking part in integrated education.Target groups:Roma students, their parents non roma students, lawyers and students willing to volunteer for a common cause,general public, local and central stakeholders in education.Results:4 enforced communities,at least 80 students transferred,network of pro bono lawyers,24+12 local parents action.The main message is: Segregation is harmful!

Summary of project results

CFCF united the experiences of volunteer recruitment and community building with the routine gained during fieldwork and advocacy. The foundation targeted 4 cities (Budapest , Piliscsaba, Nyíregyháza and Ercsi) where building on the local volunteer work they formed parent advocacy groups. Through the project the foundation managed to eliminate school segregation in upgoing education system in Piliscsaba. CFCF provided legal representation for 50 children in enrollment from segregated schools into integrated ones, and one of the cases went to the European Court of Human Rights. CFCF initiated a compensation case with 3 pro bono lawyers representing 63 children from Gyöngyöspata who had been segregated and the students of CFCF lawclinic took part in the preparation as well. A research was conducted about how books illustrate roma people, and they proposed changes about their modification. The foundation prepared 20 short films and a documentary movie presenting the work throughout the project.
