Description

In Hungary, people living with disabilities are not granted many of their fundamental rights, most importantly, to live independently and participate fully in all aspects of life. Despite the right (granted in CRPD) of persons with disabilities to have the opportunity to choose their place of residence, approx. 25,000 are segregated in large institutions. Other problem areas include: accessibility, access to education on an equal basis (inclusive education), reasonable accommodation in the workplace (promote work experience in the open labour market). We have tried to facilitate changes on numerous official fora, our efforts have been unsuccessful so far. To raise awareness to the social exclusion of persons living with disabilities. We would like to promote tolerance, acceptance and inclusion for all, because integration cannot be achieved without changes in the majority. For people with disabilities, we would to provide a healthy identity and support self-advocacy. Our project is meant to promote a dialogue between DPOs and other organizations. Changes in legislation and everyday life of persons with disabilities. Attitude change in society, creation of socially sensitive communities. Pinpoint problem areas, raising awareness, promoting self-advocacy, create action plans and lobbying. The event will support community life and activism. Persons with disabilities (4.6% of population) and their families and friends. Supporters in majority society. Disability advocacy groups.

Summary of project results

Participation in the life of the society is a fundamental human right of handicapped people, however it faces to serious difficulties. There is no equal access to jobs and the issue of barrier-free places is not solved neither. There is no inclusive education. With this action we wanted to call the attention to these problems. We would like to organise the event of RehabCriticalMass in every half year, involving more and more participants. We would like to streghten tolerance, reception and carrying in people. There were 2000 of participants at the event and 2000 people followed it on ustream, we had more than 100 appearance in the media. Attention concentrated on handicapped people, several civil organisations and representatives of the government contacted us,negotiations started. Our event is said to be historic in a way that descent amount of handicapped people marched in the streets. Most of the medium announced news about us on their main page. We hope that negotiations will led to result.
