Description

In Hungary there is high number of children that live in bad housing condition, which is bad for their health as well. The number of such children is growing year by year, and their living conditions are worse and worse. We design to hold a 3 days action and presenting an installation in Budapest, which displays the living conditions of the children living in housing poverty. Our goal is awareness raising and to influence the decision makers to create effective policies. We would like to reach 2 million people on the location of the program, and through the web and the media. During the 3 days of the action many thousand people will see our installation, where we going to involve people, divide leaflets, invite stake holders and celebrities. We will create a Facebook app to reach an other target group and going to organize a media campaign. Our final goal is to help the children and families who live in housing poverty. To achieve this we want to change the attitude and thinking of the public and raise the solidarity towards people living in poverty.

Summary of project results

Several hundred thousand children live in housing poverty in Hungary. This is a growing number and we believe that such a grave issue needs to be addressed. Roma communities and families are especially vulnerable and exposed to housing problems. Habitat for Humanity Hungary’s World Habitat Day (October 3-5, 2014) street campaign drew attention to these families and children. We installed a black house made of wood in a busy square of Budapest, and ask people to cover the walls with words representing children’s dreams of a home written on white bricks. Words were also collected by a Facebook app. Inside the house a photo exhibition of children living in deep poverty as well as graphics with information on housing issues and data were presented. We invited celebrities and media. 1000 white bricks were placed on the walls of the installation. Most words written on them were related to We reached an estimated 2.8 million people through the media. An estimated 5000 people were involved.
