Description

Approaching the end of one’s life is a vulnerable period of time in both the life of patients and their relatives. ‪Two-thirds of the population of Hungary would choose to die at home in case of an incurable disease, but nearly two-thirds die in hospital. ‪The objective is to contribute to the development of the capacity of organisations providing hospice care by involving more volunteers, to facilitate the development of hospice care providers, as well as to increase the professional and general awareness and recognition.‬ The project will strengthen the Foundation's volunteer base; create the instructors’ base necessary, support with relevant data the effect and the cost-effectiveness of hospice care. The project outputs are: hospice volunteer training and curriculum development; training of instructors and curriculum development; quality of life measurement. The target groups are volunteers; instructors; patients; the immediate family members of patients.

Summary of project results

The aim of the project was developing a special hospice volunteer training program and increasing the number of the hospice volunteers at Pécs-Baranya Hospice Program (PBHP). The project was needed because patients in advanced stages and their family often need help in their everyday life. Professionals provide medical care but the patients and their cares also need other kinds of support: volunteers can help a lot. PBHP developed a special hospice volunteer training program and trained 20 volunteers. A special 'train the trainer' program was also developed and 5 employees attended it. Further objectives were the adaptation of a quality of life measurement and cost-benefit analysis in Hungary. Main activities/outputs were curriculum development and training for the volunteers
 and the trainers
; adaptation of quality of life measurement hospice-related cost-benefit analysis. By the end of the project, 22 volunteers have started working at the PBHP. The so-called Patient Outcome Scale and a special hospice-related cost-benefit analysis has been adapted and a pilot measurement has been implemented.
