Description

The aim is to empower the most vulnerable 15 communities of Hungary by reducing the chances of being penalized because of the conditions of bikes. When solving this very concrete problem they also will train and support local Community Action Groups to become active civic citizens by generating democracy strengthening processes and empowering communities. The project promoters will be training civil activism and supporting the creation of 15 CAGs, preparing 750 bikes for safe trafficking, implementing a local and national media campaign about the program, the results and the stakeholders, keeping permanent contact and mentoring the CAGs. By doing this they also will lay down the solid basics of a large-scale national network, which aims to bring together people who really want to change their life, and support the strengthening of democratic values. The results will be used to support those living in exclusion to become self-sufficient and self-confident active citizens.

Summary of project results

The wheel-dialogue project was needed first of all, because in the last few years Roma people in segregated settlements were disproportionately often fined by the police for small traffic offences. For low-income people living in villages in the countryside, having a bicycle is crucial for travelling and transportation. The implementers did not expect a sudden change in the attitude of the police, this being a short distance project. However, they thought that they can achieve a change at least in the settlements they visited and worked with. To empower the local Roma community through positive experiences and teach them about active citizenship. To equip the bicycles of local people, making them safer, and to also reduce the amount of fines given out by the police.During the preparation time, locals gained more special knowledge about active citizenship and carried out certain exercises and collected personal experiences and the safety of the bicycles went without problems.
