Description

The oppression and discrimination of marginalized groups is real in society. The members of vulnerable groups often suffer the consequences of their environment’s prejudice and negative attitudes. This action aims to raise awareness among the public so that they would understand and accept the members of vulnerable groups, and to reduce prejudice and stereotypes in society. The action will inform the general public about the problems faced by vulnerable groups, increase the visibility of human right issues in local communities, empower the members of vulnerable groups and strengthen the capacity of local CSOs. The action will include Human Library volunteer training and events (one for the youth and one for the public). The target groups are youth (25 persons), the general public (40) and volunteers members of vulnerable groups (20). The public will be informed about the project through 10 press releases and some promo material (500 leaflets, 100 posters, FB ads for 15 000 users).

Summary of project results

Human Library in Action against Prejudice started with finding members of vulnerable groups (LGBT, Roma people, persons with disability, homeless persons, national minority members etc.) to participate in the action as “human books”. 18 volunteers were educated to participate in the Human Library and 2 Human Library activities were held: one with 25 students at the Opatija Grammar School, and another at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka, which included 112 students and members of the public. The action contributed to the empowerment of the members of vulnerable groups and raising awareness among visitors, who were given the chance to talk to the “books” and find out about difficulties and discrimination they face in everyday life. Collaboration with 7 CSOs was strengthened. The public was informed about the importance of the action and the issues of marginalized groups by 23 media releases and 6 announcements on the LORI webpage; 8546 Facebook users saw the ad.
