Description

The ultimate target of this project is the support of socially vulnerable families in the rural area of Drama via education and unemployment eradication. The project will employ young and long-term unemployed teachers who will provide educational support to elementary and high school students forming classes of less than ten students selected from families facing economic disparities.

Summary of project results

Economic crisis lead hundreds of our fellow citizens to unemployment and poverty. According to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), Prefecture of Drama is among the 13 prefectures of the country with the highest unemployment rate. Taken the above into consideration, and in combination with the increased need for helping economically weak students, the operation of a Social Tuition Centre in Drama (and specifically in the Municipality of Choristi) was more important than ever. Through this project, the Association has supported Primary and Secondary school students whose families could not afford to pay the concrete expenses. During the project, 100 students of all grades of Primary and Secondary (Junior and Senior High School students) attended courses of all subjects free of charge. Moreover, the fact that four teachers were employed (they were paid per hour), was also an important achievement of the project. In addition, it’s worth mentioning the fact that 4 volunteer teachers had the opportunity to offer their knowledge to the students. This had many benefits. Firstly, the required teaching hours in the Social Tuition Centre were covered and also the principals and values of volunteerism and humanism were raised, and became a shining example for others to follow. Undoubtedly, the results of the project have been of major importance. On the one hand, the students of the third class of Senior High School took part in the Panellenic exams in 2015 scoring a successful rate of 50%. On the other hand, it resulted in strengthening and supporting both the local community and the civil society, since significant assistance was given to families, which even though facing serious survival problems, they were given the chance not to deprive their children from their right in education. To sum up, the fact that the students of the Social Tuition Centre took part in many activities, cultural events and group activities was very important. This resulted in making them feel the joy of creativity, and encouraged them to develop the concepts of socialization and teamwork.
