Description

Smurfit Kappa Nervión has modern facilities to manufacture paper sheet, to make sacks used to hold industrial products. This type of technical paper must fulfill many high requirements to resist the high filling speeds and the later manipulation of the full sacks. The aim of this project is to improve the technical characteristics of this paper. The project intends to conduct research and development (R&D) on new additives to add during the preparation of the pulp to improve the technical characteristics of the paper and to generate less waste because of the resulting better fibre retention. The project will also conduct R&D on new paper machine clothing to improve the fibre retention in the de-formation zone and on the processing of de-formed paper sheet in a way that is soft enough to avoid deterioration during the drying process. Finally, R&D will be aimed at new refining technologies to the pulp in order to decrease energy consumption. Our target is to introduce into the market a new improved type of technical paper for sacks, which is environmental friendly and manufactured with less energy consumption.

Summary of project results

The aim of this project has been to improve the technical characteristics of the paper for sacks, focusing simultaneously on three main points of the production process: the preparation area of the pulp, the refining area and the paper machine clothing We researched and developed new additives to add during the preparation of the pulp to improve the technical characteristics of the paper and to generate less waste because of the better fibre retention We developed new paper machine clothing, not only to improve the fiber retention in the de formation zone, but also to process de formed paper sheet in a softly enough way to avoid deterioration during the drying process We applied new refining technologies to the pulp in order to decrease energy consumption while increasing the paper quality As a consequence of the success of this project, we introduce in the market a new improved type of technical paper for sacks, manufactured with less energy consumption and more environmental friendly.
