Description

In the last decades, the environmental restrictions have promoted the study of more efficient technologies for waste water treatment whose real application would involve, in most cases, unacceptable costs. This project is aimed at developing an innovative technology (FentO3) focused on an efficient, versatile and sustainable treatment of real industrial and WWTP effluents that could bring a positive social and economic impact at a medium term period. The technology will combine solar photo-Fenton and ozonation processes, which has never been applied for real effluent treatment. The main achievements will be the increase of the treatment efficiency associated to synergy effects of reagents combination, the enhancement of water biodegradability, the reduction of the emerging/specific pollutants and microbial charge and the minimization of economic costs.

Summary of project results

In Europe there are currently 78 millions m3 per day of industrial effluents produced. Industries need alternative ways of treatments to the traditional biological systems (high quantity of recalcitrant pollutants) or physico-chemical processes (high costs and environmental impacts). This project developed an innovative technology (Fento3) that has been found to be versatile and sustainable to treat real effluents coming from pharmaceutical o textile industries. This tecnology is a simultaneous combination of H2O2-Fe2+-O3-UV/Visible at a laboratory scale. It is the first time that this combination was used to treat real effluents. The tecnology has been proven to be cheaper and more sustainable, between 1.5 and 3 times more compared to other tecnologies being used nowadays and a perfect tecnology to be used as a tertiary treatment. DEISA will continue analyzing and investing in RD&I to do a step further and test this tecnology in a pre-industrial scale.
