Description

The maritime sector is a considerable contributor to global emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and SOx. The entry into force, in 2016, of restrictive regulations in terms of emissions in certain geographical areas is creating a need in the marine sector for the promotion of new technologies so that engines can reach the required emission values. The essential concept of dual-fuel technology is to provide a means of utilizing natural gas as fuel, while retaining the option and ability to switch to liquid fuels if and when needed. Within the project there will be developed various strands of different technologies, that combined, will provide a new and viable solution.

Summary of project results

The overall project objective has been to consolidate Wärtsila as global leader in the development of dual solutions for marine sector engines through the increase in the engine efficiency and reduction, below the future regulations, of the emission values in order to promote their use in areas specially protected environmentally such as the North Sea. The outcome of all this dual-fuel development work has been an unprecedented flexibility, both in fuel choice and operational performance. Since natural gas has low levels of harmful emissions, and is relatively low in price, such flexibility is increasingly seen as being the key to compliance with environmental legislation.
