Description

Current tendency worldwide towards sustainable mobility will certainly spark the use of motorcycles as an environmentally friendly option. The project is devoted to the development of an exhaust system adapted to integrate a catalyst capable of reducing emissions in four-stroke engines in urban and interurban motorcycles. The main goal is to maintain the benefits in terms of power and performance of the original engine while achieving a substantial reduction in emissions. To achieve this, a parallel development of the exhaust system with an adaptation of engine combustion control system has been planned. The prototypes will be tested following European regulations. The project is implemented in partnership with Speed Options AS, a Norwegian company with long experience in this sector.

Summary of project results

The main achievements of this project are: • Develop a prototype exhaust system catalyst TWC valid for a scooter type motorcycle 530 cm3. This prototype cumplies with the regulations of Euro 3, and that from the viewpoint of manufacture and assembly can be valid for scooter type motorcycle 350 to 800 cm3. • programming a thermo-fluid-dynamic model of the engine computing a commercial software (AVL Boost) and procedure adjustment to similar engines. This will allow without bench testing to determine working conditions of the catalyst family scooter 350 to 800 cm3. • working method based on the measurement of emissions on test bench with roller dynamometer that allows specify the TWC catalyst that allows compliance with the Euro 4 limits and Euro 5.

Summary of bilateral results

A Norwegian distribution company is involved in this project. This Norwegian company is interested in the product in order to offer their customers with special celerity. That aspect of rapid introduction of new product into the market together with the previously explained technical aspects give to this project an innovative and entrepreneur value, in addition to the benefits on environment by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and pollutants at low cost associated and high energy efficiency.
