Description

The project addresses the challenges faced by the beekeeping industry in Lovech District. The project aims at raising beekeepers’ standard of living by enabling them to join associations. First, the project will be presented to about 50 stakeholders in Lovech. Second, the challenges and needs of at least 100 beekeepers’ in Lovech District will be studied through a questionnaire. Third, 3 working groups will be set up to discuss and develop an action plan. Fourth, 40 beekeepers will be trained for 2 days to register as farmers, create a common information system for spraying, do networking and mobile beekeeping. Next, a methodology for regional beekeepers’ associations will be complied. Then 2 advocacy campaigns for amendments to the Beekeeping Act will be held. Finally, a national meeting of beekeepers’ associations will be held to share experience and good practices. The project will benefit beekeepers in Lovech District and the local community in general.

Summary of project results

The project addressed the challenges faced by the beekeeping industry in Lovech District and as a result of its activities, a methodology was developed for the association of beekeepers in the district as a way to develop and protect the profession. In addition, Regional Beekeepers’ Structure was set up in Lovech District to protect the interests of local beekeepers. The project participants adopted an Appeal towards all district and municipal beekeeping structures in the country to unite. The beekeepers from Lovech District took part for the first time in advocacy campaigns (three in total) and initiated requests for amendments to the Beekeeping Act. The proposals for amendments were submitted to the Parliament. The target groups were actively involved throughout the project. The participants were involved in a number of meetings and training sessions and thus raised their capacity to work with institutions, programmes, opportunities to apply for projects.
