Description

The project addresses the challenges faced by epileptics and their families (lack of social integration and resistance to the idea of epileptics being capable of leading an independent life). The project aims at helping social integration of epileptics by individually working with them and their families. First, the needs of 30 stakeholders (epileptics, their parents and medical specialists) will be assessed in 3 focus groups. Second, a methodology for individual work with epileptics and their families will be developed. Third, 10 mediators will be hired in Sofia, Plovdiv, Pleven and Ruse to test the service and will be trained. Fourth, the mediators will work with 20 epileptics and their families for 4 months. Finally, the experience gathered will be presented in a guide for specialists. The project will benefit epileptics and their families, health and social authorities and the public in general.

Summary of project results

The project addressed the challenges faced by epileptics and their families (lack of social integration and resistance to the idea of epileptics being capable of leading an independent life). As a result of the project a model of two-way individual work with young people with epilepsy and their parents was created, tested and analyzed. The methodology developed is an adequate model to stimulate the development of young people with epilepsy due to its potential to eliminate unfavourable family factors. The project activities also included training of mediators for individual work with representatives of the target groups. The developed model was applied in practice by the trained mediators in their individual work with 20 young people with epilepsy and their families. The developed Manual for specialists based on the project activities carried out was disseminated among a broader range of specialists and organizations. The methodology can be adapted to meet the needs of people with disabilities other than epilepsy. For more information, visit: frde.org
