Description

The project addresses the issue of integrating the EU strategy on adaptation to climate change (CCA) in the regional/local Plans for Sustainable Development. The project aims at raising the awareness of the civil society and increasing the contribution to and involvement of NGOs in sustainable development. First, the EU and national legal framework on climate change will be reviewed and analyzed. 3 reports and recommendations will be issued. Second, the capacity for encouraging CCA policies will be boosted through 10 best European practices identified, 3 round tables organized and 1 action plan proposed. Thus all the stakeholders will cooperate in the drafting of local and regional sustainable development plans. The project will benefit the 2 main target groups of decision makers and young people and the additional target groups of the media, NGOs, public administration by boosting their capacity for CCA.

Summary of project results

It was necessary to “translate” the EU Directives on climate change into a comprehensible language for decision-makers, integrate them in Sustainable Development Plans (SDP) and ensure sustainable development in the context of climate change. The project helped the organization have its voice “heard” and achieve a new mode of communication between the group of decision-makers and the public on issues of importance for the public that need consensus to allocate resources for their timely solution. The organization achieved its goals and raised the awareness as an NGO about the urgency of integrating the EU strategies and policies for the adaptation to climate change in the regional/local SDPs. The regional authorities showed interest in cooperation for the implementation of the next stage of introduction of good practices for sustainable development. The project aimed at preparing proposals for the inclusion of the EU strategies and policies for the adaptation to climate change in the national, regional and local SDPs and the development of an action plan. The proposals were prepared as a result of the joint work during the 3 round tables and the final conference under the project with the participation of the target groups of young people, politicians, the media, informal civic groups. 3 analyses of the up-to-date EU policies and strategies for the adaptation to climate change and their integration at all levels were prepared, 11 good practices for adaptation to climate change were identified and 5 of them were selected. The documents were disseminated among the public through 2 press conferences, 1 printed and 3 electronic newsletters, the publication “Recommendations for adaptation to climate change” and an action plan. The two main target groups (decision-makers and young people) and the secondary groups (the media, NGOs, informal groups and the public administration), more than 180 people in total raised their capacity for adaptation to climate change directly through the events carried out, and more than 2500 people – indirectly by visiting the organization’s web portal.
