Description

The project addresses the need for clean toilets in schools to prevent children from developing kidney diseases due to holding it in. The project aims at bringing together the stakeholders (parents, medical experts, teachers and the institutions) to draft an ordinance on clean sanitation facilities in schools. First, the sanitation conditions in 3 schools will be surveyed via questionnaires. Second, 3 focus groups with the parents of school students and children with kidney diseases, teachers and medical experts and institution representatives will be carried out to discuss their proposals. Third, a draft ordinance on clean toilets in schools will be prepared. Finally, the document will be submitted to the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and will be presented to the stakeholders. The project will benefit all school children, their parents, teachers, school management, the education and health authorities and the public in general.

Summary of project results

Medical statistical data is showing that about 119 000 children have renal issues because they abstain from going to the toilet due to bad hygiene and poor facilities. Personal hygiene is an important factor for the treatment and future life of children with renal deficiency and diseases. What is more, personal hygiene acts as health prevention for the remaining children at school. When the Ministry of Health was requested to help with the problem, the Ministry responded that "an ordinance could be drafted" ensuring clean sanitary facilities. This is the first step that ensures the hygiene of sanitary facilities. This project aimed at empowering the vulnerable group to prepare a draft to a legislative act. Parents, parties that are directly affected by the treatment and education – medical specialists and teachers, as well as representatives of the responsible institutions such Regional Health Inspectorates and the Ministry of Health raised the issue in public and took the first steps and activities to solve it. Three focus groups with parents, medical specialists, teachers and representatives of the institutions were held under the project, a working group was set up and a draft document to a legislative act was prepared based on the collected and summarized information from the focus groups. This draft document was submitted and discussed with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Science to be applied in practice. The fact that the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Science recognized the document and the commitments made for its inclusion in the forthcoming legislative acts of the two ministries makes this draft document stable in time.
