Description

The project addresses the need for early detection and prevention of developmental problems of children before they start going to school. The project aims to join the efforts of all the stakeholders involved (pediatricians, parents, teachers, kindergarten and school staff) to ensure early detection of developmental problems. First, 15 specialists in the town of Yambol will be trained in early detection and prevention of developmental problems in children. They will also be trained in early detection in children aged 2-6. Second, 400 children aged 2-6 will be screened and the findings will be analyzed. Third, 20 kindergarten teachers of children aged 2-6 will be trained to detect problems and refer the child and the parents to treatment. Finally, a report with the findings and recommendations to the stakeholders will be prepared. The project will benefit not only these 400 children but also their parents and teachers and will ensure timely detection of developmental problems.

Summary of project results

The project addressed the need for early detection and prevention of developmental problems of children before they start going to school and covered 336 children and 28 specialists from seven kindergartens in Yambol Municipality. The specialists were trained and they taught the children by the means of a standard test for early detection and prevention of children with developmental problems. As a result the specialists working with the children and their parents had their capacity for detection of early signs of developmental problems boosted. A report with conclusions based on the tests was drafted and recommendations were made to the parents to refer to a specialist for the cases of over 40 children that showed linguistic deficiency or neurodevelopmental disorders. The trained specialists highly appreciated the methodology used and showed their willingness to continue to use in their practice the early detection tests after the project end.
