Marine technologies intend to capture the energy from waves, tides and the heat stored in the water. They offer huge potential and represent a relatively young category of renewables. Among all the Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) technologies, offshore wind energy, stream (in the straits), waves and Sea Water Air Cooling Conditioning (SWAC) are of utmost interest for the Mediterranean, although they are at different maturity stages according to technologies. Offshore wind energy is by far, the primary energy for the supply of electricity injected into the Mediterranean networks. Therefore, it is important to consider the latest technological aspects of this field. The project aims to enhance Greek businesses’ competetiveness in the Blue Energy and Marine Renewable Energy sectors, build their capacity and take advantage of future opportunities in relation to EU Green Deal and the Greek National Strategy on renewables.
The project will be implemented by 3 Greek companies (SYNERGASIA, ENERGEIN, and Kinno), that will organise 3 training seminars on Blue and Marine Energy Development, including 3 study visits to good practice projects, procure a pre-feasibility study for the development of offshore wind farms in Greece, create an online "Living Lab" on Blue Energy Growth, and analytical Business Guidebooks for the activation of organised marketplaces through Blue Energy. In the current project, the three companies will collaborate to increase their competences in the Blue Energy sector, with ENERGEIN providing the insights and link to the wholesale electricity market and Kinno being the outwards facing partner and acting as the link with expertise outside Greece. The project will also involve a Norwegian subcontractor, who will assist in the project activities by providing the Norwegian context as well as insights.

Activity 1 - Organization of 3 Training Seminars in Critical Sectors for Blue Energy Development.
The project team organized 3 seminars on Blue Energy Development: Wind Energy, Wave – Ocean Energy, Osmotic Energy, Marine Geothermal, Marine Solar Energy, etc. These seminars were one-day long and distinguished experts from Greece was invited to address issues regarding innovative technologies, tools and practices that stand out today at global and European level.
Activity 2 - Organization of Study Visits to 3 Good Practices of Blue Energy Development
Wave energy power at the Port of Heraklion
The project concerns the exploitation of wave energy and includes the study and design for the installation of a wave generator station on the shielding of the windward pier.
Offshore wind power in Crete
The National Offshore Windfarm Development Programme of Greece, focuses on 12 areas around Greece as potential areas for offshore wind development, 2 of which concerns Crete, with a development horizon of 2030:
- The coastal area between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia, with the Gulf of Mirabello as a reference point, where 600 megawatts of floating wind turbines are planned to be installed.
- And the coastal area east of Sitia, where 200 megawatts of floating wind turbines are planned to be installed.
Activity 3 - Data analysis and pre-feasibility study for the development of offshore wind farms in Greece
The purpose of the Action was to prepare a pre-feasibility study for the deployment of offshore wind farms in Greece: Mapping of the external environment affecting offshore wind power parks in our country (legislation, funding, social impact, etc.), good practices and modern trends. The aim was for business executives to become familiar with current practices in order to improve their know-how and develop business efforts in this direction.
Activity 4 - Creation of an Online “Living Lab” on Blue Energy Growth
All the material developed in the project is now available on an online platform, where interested parties can also register to make specific requests for cooperation, inform, and be informed about operational activities and potential partnerships.
Activity 5: Creation of Analytical Business Guidebooks for Activation in Organized Marketplaces through Blue Energy
A detailed guidebook that presents the available financing (EU and institutional financing, private funding, public funding in Greece) as well as guidelines on the financial aspects of offshore wind development projects as well as the main stakeholders on a European level. An analysis of the institutional and development environment in Norway and Iceland were also presented.
The project led to an increased capacity for business development in the area of Blue/Marine energy for the 3 partners, as well as for other interested companies in Greece. Through the project activities, interested parties can be informed about the technologies, relevant pilot projects, as well as future deployment in Greece (especially for offshore wind).
