Description
Kotronis Packaging is considering expanding its business to secondary packaging for the medical sector. The idea of expansion and particularly to this sector derives from several benefits and opportunities for the company and due to the fact that there is a noted gap for innovation in sustainable medical packaging, which means that the market analysis is essential to look into the expansion. Kotronis Packaging decided to look into expanding to the medical packaging sector since they will have a competitive advantage due to the similarities with the market they are already in but also to investigate the possibility to produce medical packaging more environmentally friendly than the existing solutions.
The project will be implemented in collaboration with a Norwegian Partner, Norner As. Norner is a leading industrial polymer Research & Development centre for the polymer and plastics industry with over 40 years of experience. Norner currently has 90 employees from 12 nationalities and is in an exciting development phase.
Norner covers the whole polymer value chain from catalyst and process development for polymerisation, polymer modification, polymer additivation, industrial applications of polymer to innovative solutions for plastics in a circular economy. Provide R&D and technical services to various industry segments where innovative solutions of plastics and composites are requested. Norner is owned by SCG Chemicals, one of the largest integrated petrochemicals companies in Thailand and has more than 700 customers in over 60 countries.
Its main focus industries are: Polymer, Energy, Packaging, Infrastructure, Healthcare.
Norner As will conduct the market study, on behalf of Plastics K Kotronis.
Summary of project results
The project''s aim was to assist the project promoter in their decision to expand to a different market than their primary market of plastic food packaging. In that regard, a thorough market analysis was procured from Norwegian project partner Norner As.
The project promoter procured a detailed market analysis for the secondary packaging market for the medical / pharmaceutical sector. The study included a detailed analysis of the market in Greece (main players, product differentiation, technologies implemented) as well as an investigation for "design for recycling" alternatives for medical packaging and opportunities for introducing post-consumer recyclate (PCR) into medical packaging. The study also looked in polymer raw materials that would be suitable for flexible and rigid medical packaging, as well as a thorough review of the regulatory framework in the EU for medical packaging.
The project will assist Kotronis Packaging to make an informed decision about whether or not an expansion to the medical packaging market is feasible and recommended or not. It increases the company''s level of knowledge on the market while also looking at opportunities related to the use of recycled raw materials in the production (something that is not possible for food packaging, due to regulations related to food safety).
