Description
The main target of the project is to increase digital competences among 2060 participants, including 2000 students and 60 teachers in the area of programming (C++,Java,Python) and database operation (SQL) through remote learning on the LNU platform and participation in project tasks.Raising digital competences, especially specialist competences in the field of programming and database operation, is an important factor influencing the development of the knowledge-based economy, which is one of the strategic targets of the city of Warsaw. The implementation of the project will contribute to increasing the quality and competitiveness of Warsaw’s human and social capital as a factor determining development by equipping students and teachers with the competences needed in the modern world. The result of the project will be, among others:1.Increase digital competences among 2000 students through the possibility of using the resources of the LNU platform, 2.Gaining by 250 students a certificate in programming in SQL and Python, 3.Increase the quality of the educ. offer of schools supported by the P, through access to the resources of the LNU platform 4.Increase of ICT competences among 60 teachers, so their will be able to share their knowledge with other staff employed in schools, as well as transfer the acquired knowledge to future students of the school. These activities will positively affect the equalization of educational opportunities for students from schools supported by the ptoject located in Warsaw, and in a broader perspective, increase the social cohesion of the region. The implementation of the project will have a positive impact on the situation of students on the labor market, developing pro-economic attitudes among participants, developing their interests and talents desired in the modern labor market.
Summary of project results
The project addressed significant educational needs in the information society by developing key skills among students and teachers required in a country aspiring to create a knowledge-based economy: the development of practical skills in programming and databases; the advancement of computational thinking skills; improvement of reading comprehension and problem-solving abilities; enhancement of communication skills and teamwork; fostering basic entrepreneurial skills, project creation, and management abilities.
An important aspect was also to counteract social exclusion by engaging students in educational activities regardless of their material, social, age, or gender status.
Computer education, including programming and database learning, is part of the core curriculum in primary and secondary schools in Poland. However, for various reasons - such as complex subject matter, limited class hours allocated for program implementation, teacher overload with the necessity of independently checking source codes/commands/projects prepared by students, and insufficient teacher competencies - the actual educational outcomes often fall short of expectations.
The project aimed to improve the effectiveness of computer education in schools by providing access to professional, innovative tools supporting students and teachers in the learning process. Students and teachers gained access to the educational platform of the LNU Foundation. The platform is a professional, commercial tool that enables students to learn individually but primarily supports teachers by:
Ready-made courses (Python, C++, SQL, Java) provide teachers with complete materials for lessons. The platform offers premium courses for students with special interests and talents in computer science, as well as courses based on the curriculum implemented in computer science lessons, tailored to the abilities of students with different interests.
In addition to using ready-made courses on the platform, students also participated in team project tasks. The result of these activities are narrative programming missions available on the platform as a full-fledged product for other users. These are extremely valuable projects that develop creativity, communication skills, and teamwork (soft skills), project management, and a professional approach to work.
