Summary of project results

The "LGBTQ+ Friendly Schools 2.0" project responded to the needs related to the activation of schools for LGBTQ+ minorities. The project was largely intended to combat the chilling effect that affected schools after the announcement of changes in cooperation between institutions and NGOs. Additionally, the main goal was to support and build youth agency for human rights. Being an LGBTQ+ person or even being an ally in Polish schools is often associated with stigmatization experienced by young people from their peers. There was also a huge need for educational and corrective actions at the level of specific institutions.

The project included two paths: support for school communities - 10 school groups took part in the diagnosis and research of their own school community. This was related to their position in the Ranking of LGBTQ+ Friendly Schools and the possibility of improving their position in the study. Additionally, in each of these groups, an activity supporting the school community was carried out. Young people had access to training, mentors and experts. The second path concerned systemic change at school, i.e. school statutes. 15 recommendations in 15 different analyzes were addressed to schools and young people who reported such a need.

The target group of the project were young LGBTQ+ people and young allied people. Additionally, the indirect group included entire school communities for which events were organized (on-site, online or even outside the school in order to maintain safety). The project contributed to counteracting the chilling effect because it proposed alternative forms of action with school children or institutions. Thanks to the solutions, the situation of institutions participating in the Ranking of LGBTQ+ Friendly Schools has improved (which was immediately visible in the Ranking results). Young people gained greater agency because the organization of events was in their hands. Therefore, the project resulted not only in raising awareness, but also in increasing the space for social action and building bridges in a difficult environment.

Summary of bilateral results

The cooperation with the Norwegian partner organization Terram Pacis allowed three people from the Foundation''s project team to take part in workshops and seminars in Oslo, which allowed them to learn the perspective of the work of non-governmental organizations in Norway dealing with equality education, human rights and the organization of projects for youth and adults. The study visit allowed for a direct comparison of experiences and practices used in schools in Poland and Norway. Cooperation with the partner went smoothly. The date and details of the visit were agreed via e-mail by the person designated to organize bilateral cooperation (Aleksandra Stube) in consultation with the project team.
