Description

The project, which consists of the main exhibition at the DOX Centre along with an attendant and educational programme, is a continuation of the institution's successful fulfilment of its mission, which is to "present and promote contemporary art within the context of subjects that are changing today's world," which corresponds to the programme's results. The project is aligned with the priorities of State Cultural Policy for 2013-2014 with an outlook to 2015-2020 and meets requirements for inclusion of innovative teaching methods in education. The project objective lies in an open critique of omnipresent commercialization, consumerism, dominance of economic indicators and prosperity, misuse of technology to control society and the individual, as well as the ever-increasing power of the media and science. This idea will be presented to the public via both domestic and international art, which shall facilitate the development of cultural dialogue. The main outcome of the project is the exposition in the DOX Centre together with the accompanying programme. This will consist of six programmes based on specific events related to the theme that are topical at that point in time. The exhibition will address and gain the attention of the general public. Its goal is also to familiarize new groups of visitors with contemporary art (with an emphasis on school groups, among others). The project has no donor partner.

Summary of project results

The project was aimed at the presentation and promotion contemporary art within the context of subjects that are changing today´s world. "The Brave New World" exhibition was based on a comparison of social models as described by Aldous Huxley, George Orwell and Ray Bradbury in their famous dystopic visions of the future, with the current social situation, especially the area of social control, consumerism, and the media. The exhibiton took place in The DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague from 11st September 2015 (vernissage on 10th September 2015) till 25th January 2016 including accompanying and educational programmes for schools, families and public (lectures, workshops, guided tours, etc.). The exhibiton was very well received by Czech and as well as by foreign visitors. It has became the fourth most visited exhibition in the Czech Republic in 2015 (approximately 26 052 visitors). The prestigious British magazine "Aesthetica" added the exhibition to TOP10 autumn´s season exhibitions to see (worldwide). The project has managed to reach a wide public society with current issues and topics (eg. public oversight x individual freedom, commercialization, media influence, the negative aspects of science etc.). Although project originally didn´t include cooperation with partners from donor states, in the course however, two initiatives from Bilateral Fund at the program level were implemented: 1 / Enlargement of the "Brave New World Ltd." (Nr. 1) and 2 / Enlargement of the "Brave New World Ltd." (Nr. 2).
