Description

The project aims to preserve Czech cultural technical heritage and to stimulate economic development in the Jeseník area through (cultural) tourism by reconstruction of the bridge on a local road in the town Jeseník (Olomouc Region) across the river Bělá. The bridge is unique and historically first example of use of a riveted bridge construction, built in 1901-1902. On one side of the bridge are preserved granite banisters with cast-iron lamp. The bridge is almost 17 meters long 9 meters wide. After 113 years, the bridge is now in a state of disrepair, the foundations of the bridge are uncovered, with no insulation and heavily corroded steel construction. The overall condition of the structure is very bad as well as the condition of the supporting structure of the bridge. The bridge construction corresponds to the age and the materials used, technology and quality of work. Given the bridge condition and its status of a technical monument the aim of the project is to reconstruct the bridge so that it is similar to the original construction after the initial completion. Thus, the repair will consist of removing of the unoriginal pavement construction and the layers of the road and in moving the engineering network cables into a separate pipe construction next to the bridge. Blast cleaning of the steel supporting construction will be carried out and corroded elements will be replaced using the 1905 methods such as riveting. A new anti-corrosion protection will be introduced with several layers of paint afterwards. In the direction of the Horova street a ramp will follow the deck in order to overcome the elevation difference between the bridge and the street. Pipe railing with two handles will be placed along the ramp and the staircase. Thanks to the project the bridge will no longer be dangerous for pedestrians and will remind passing public about its history and significance as technical monument.

Summary of project results

The project was aimed at the overall reconstruction of the bridge securing its preservation for future generations. The bridge was in serious disrepair and structurally unsound. Without project implementation, later reconstruction would not be possible and the bridge would cease to exist or reconstruction would be extremely costly. Given the dilapidated conditions and the bridge being a technical monument, the objective of the project was to save significant and illustrative sample of a historic bridge with the aim to preserve the historic, architectural and aesthetic character and heritage of Jeseník area, and to provide a sense of place and continuity. Achieved: Reconstruction and preservation solutions appropriate for the bridge applied including rehabilitation for pedestrian use. Aesthetic aspects ensured, so that the visual impact on the landscape is positive. The expected outcome of the project was to reconstruct the bridge so that it is similar to the original construction after the initial completion. Achieved: The bridge has been reconstructed with an emphasis on preserving the historical appearance of the monument including its original utilisation for pedestrian use. Outputs delivered: - Reconstructed historic bridge as a physical example of the progress and the development of engineering, architecture, art and technology safeguarding the existence and appearance of historic elements of the community including the new safety elements included. - Safe and easy access across the river Bělá. - Significant visual impact on the landscape.
