Description

Urban gardening is popular in the city of Tallinn. The project aims to expand the possibilities of bigger gardening slots. Currently, in Tallinn, there are community gardens, but they can only give out small 1mx1m boxes to the citizens. Creating the first allotment garden is widening possibilities for more people to start urban gardening and choose between the slots they desire. NGO Pelguaed is an active community garden; they have a long waiting list for citizens to join the community garden. Interreg Central Baltic project B.Green is creating green infrastructure solutions that support cities in reaching climate change adaptation and mitigation goals. One of the pilots focuses on developing at Pollinator Highway Tallinn''s first allotment garden. We have prepared the landscape architecture design and modelling the allotment garden implementation with service design. This project is the next step to building the garden and supporting the local community and general city gardening in Tallinn City.

The garden with a modern design has created even better opportunities for city residents to grow food, spend free time, and organize community events and outdoor lessons for residents and anyone interested. The need to implement the project is desires to find a comprehensive pilot solution with a modern design, the best functionality, compositionally balanced, sustainable development, which would support community gardening activities and whose experience could be transferred to other parts of Tallinn and overall Estonia.

Target groups: Põhja-Tallinn district citizens, urban gardening enthusiasts all over the city and people who are interested in joining the gardening community but have not done it yet. Also, other municipalities can take over and use the allotment garden model.

Summary of project results

The main goal was to build a complete and modern allotment garden with best functionality that follows sustainable development principles that supports the activities in the garden. With this pilot the popularity of urban gardening and gained experience could be transferred to other places in Tallinn and also Estonia.

This project created an allotment garden in Pelgulinn (a district in Tallinn). Not just construction works, but also workshops, community garden and communal gardens mentoring program was created, and a network of community gardens, study trips for schools and kindergartens.

The community area of the garden offers opportunities to learn about sustainable gardening, rainwater harvesting solutions and edible plants. The personal garden area is a first of its kind in Tallinn, in the middle of the city and between large residential buildings, so it is possible to grow food in your own personal garden and thereby ensure access to fresh and healthy food.
