Description

The Metsanurga area, which is partly located in the Märjamaa, is a developing industrial area, where 5 companies are currently operating along the street, and two more companies are already planning to move industry to the same area. In total nearly 150 people are working there and this makes it very important in the region. Unfortunately, the roof surfaces of production buildings and the surfaces of storage and transport sites are large, and the increase in precipitation and extreme changes in temperature have affected the industry and transport.

Because of the climate changes, the rainfall intensity is increasing and can cause transport connections stops, longer use of time in production, damage to vehicles and transport, and spoilage or damage to goods.

During the summer, heat waves from climate change can also cause damage. Due to the above, the project will set up a rainwater collection system, which will collect water during the rainy season and reuse it to irrigate green areas and, if necessary, cool down storage and transport sites.

The aim of the project is therefore to create a rainwater recovery system through the construction of a rainwater pipeline and a collection pond to prevent possible damage from heat waves and floods due to climate change by April 2024.

Within the framework of the project, a rainwater pipeline will be built under Metsanurga Street, to which the surrounding companies will join. Companies that are moving production to Metsanurga Street have also been taken into account. In total, rainwater is collected from a white area of about 100 ha and directed to a collection pond, from where it can be pumped out later and reused for landscaping. Rainwater collected from production and storage sites passes through a cleaning device, after which the water is directed to a rainwater pipeline.

Summary of project results

Metsanurga area in Märjamaa Municipality is an industrial area which roof surfaces are large at scale. Because of the climate change the rainfall intensity is increasing and cause transport connection stops in the area, which means delays in production, damage the vehicles and possibliy spoil or damage goods. To tackle this issue, a rainwater recovery system had to be implemented.

With this project a rainwater recovery system was built under Metsanurga street and all industries in the area can connect their rainwater system to that. Rainwater is collected from about 100 ha and directed to a collection pond, from where it can be pumped out later and reused for landscaping (watering). Rainwater collected from production and storage sites passes through a cleaning device, after which the water is directed to a rainwater pipeline.

Rainwater recovery system was installed - 770 meters of pipeline. An existing pond was cleaned so it could be used for rainwater collecting. There are 34 industrial companies in the area which benefit from this solution. And also everybody who uses the products manufactured by those industrial companies.
