Description

The European Union is pushing for eco-friendly packaging and want to see solutions that replace single-use plastics. Screen-O Transfer aims to be part of this change with this project.
Screen-O Transfer objective is to improve their paper cups production by creating 100% plastic-free paper cups. They aim to expand their production facilities by implementing top line technology machinery and by setting up cost-efficient production flows. This will result in more rationale and efficient use of natural resources and raw materials.
The project implementation includes new improved machinery that has a special type of sealing device which enables the device to form the plastic-free paper cups and reduce the paper waste from 5% to 2.5%. The new machinery is also able to print up to 37% more cardboard in the same given time as the previous machine. This means that Screen-O Transfer can produce more than before and with less consumption. This project will also contribute to the creation of 7 new jobs in the local community. The activities will include:

  • Project management with support from an external consultant.
  • Project publicity to ensure the visibility of the project.
  • Financial audit to verify and certify project expenses.
  • Investment activity to purchase and install the innovative machinery.

The implementation of the investment will lead to an increase in competitive advantage for the company as well as an increase in annual collection of waste from production which can be re-used or recycled. The annual energy consumption and the CO2 emissions will decrease.
Estimated annual decrease of CO2 emissions goes from 285 tonnes in 2019 to 128,59 tonnes in 2024. For the same period, annual decrease in energy consumption is estimated to go from 907,2 tonnes to 532,2 tonnes.

Summary of project results

Screen-O Transfer aimed to improve its paper cups production by creating 100% plastic-free paper cups. The Applicant aimed to expand its production facilities by procuring top line technology machinery, setting up cost-efficient production flows that will increase production capacity and will assure a more rationale and efficient use of natural resources and raw materials. Through specific set ups of operational flow, Screen-O Transfer aimed to have greener production processes.

Screen-O Transfer acquired the following equipment:
- 1 Automatic Die Cutting and Foll Stamping Machine - The width of the machine allows the Applicant to print with only 2.5% paper waste compared to 5% which is currently resulted now from the existing machine
- 3 PaperCup Forming M/C (High Speed) machines - the machine has auto staking & counting unit  and air shooting Acrylic pipe (5M) included. The "blanks" are inserted in the forming machine and the cups are formed immediately. The machine has a special type of sealing device which allows to form the plastic-free paper cups.
- 1 Flexo Press -  the machine has 6 printing units (servo system control), 1 UV and chilling system. The main advantage the machine provides is its width of 850 mm. Compared to machine that the Applicant is currently using (which only has a width of only 620 mm), the new one would bring  an increase of productivity of 37%). Having the possibility of printing up to 37% more cardboard in the same given time, combined with new efficiency technology integrated in the new machine  means that the Applicant will produce more with less consumption.

- Estimated annual growth in turnover: 122% at the end of 2024 compared to baseline year 2020: for the moment we can compare the 2020 figures, with the one registered in 2022 and we can confirm an increase from RON 6.7m to RON 25m, over 300%.

- Estimated annual growth in net operational profit (EBIT): 55% at the end of 2024 compared to baseline year 2020: the net operation profit increased with over 150% from RON  2m to RON 3.5m (2020 vs 2022).

- Estimated increase in number of new job created: 7: the number of employees registered in 2022 was equivalent with 39, versus 8 in 2020.

- Estimated annual decrease of CO2 emissions - from 285 tonnes in 2019 to 128.59 tonnes in 2024: the indicator is still under observation.

- Estimated annual decrease in energy consumption - from 907.2 tonnes in 2019 to 532.2 tonnes in 2024: the indicator is still under observation.

- Estimated annual re-use of processed waste for other operational processes - from 9.4 tonnes in 2019 to 52.4 tonnes in 2024: the indicator is still under observation.

Outputs:

- 1 innovative green technology applied (new to the enterprise) - implemented

- 1 measure implemented to decrease CO2-emissions - implemented

- 1 measure implemented to increase waste collection from operational processes - implemented

- 1 measure implemented to increase energy efficiency - implemented
