Description

This project aims to support and give motivation to Roma children education. Its goals are to improve their results in ordinary pre-school and school education by providing preliminary assistance with entering pre-school education, school education, after-school tutoring and recreational activities. The project is based upon the needs of Roma families living in the Social housing of Sokolská třída 62 in Ostrava (with a capacity of 43 standalone housing units) with the intention of helping the social inclusion of Roma families.

Summary of project results

The project was needed for socially disadvantaged (mostly Romani) families. The social worker, who worked with the families, found out many unpleasing facts: Most children were not going to pre-school and weren´t prepared to start primary education. Therefore the aim was to help children with their start in standard pre-schools and giving them the opportunity to spend time with simillar aged children. The change in the childrens behaviour is noticible. The older children had a problem with their lack of preparation, the children did not have enough space at home and their home environment wasn´t peaceful enough for them to prepare for school. Their parents weren´t able to help them. Therefore working with parents was and is one of most important activities. The project was divided into 3 activities and helped refurnish the childrens club. The first activity was divided into 3 parts: program Pre-Scholar for the children aged 3 – 6 five times a week, Program Scholar for children aged 6 – 15 and Program Train for children together with their parents in order to show them ways of spending time together and to improve their communication. The second activity focused on cooperation with organisations and institutions (mostly schools). We´re managed to cooperate with two pre-schools, five elementary schools (providing education from grade 1 – 9) and one high school. The goal of the cooperation was to mainbain childrens results and solving problems in their schools. The third activity was developing a „Vademecum“, which should set an example of good praxis. The last activity was refurnishing children´s playroom and other spaces needed for the project. We are now using the newly refurnished space to work with the families.
