Description
The Greener Association, in partnership with the Together for Chilia association, a newly established local NGO founded to facilitate the access of the inhabitants in the decision-making process, proposes the Green Chilia project, in order to improve the quality of the environment through the active involvement of the local community. The project involves organizing a research visit and analysis at the local level. 100 questionnaires will be completed in order to analyze the level of information of the inhabitants. An analysis of the resource persons, of the local stakeholders will be carried out, with the help of the partner. In this way, the need of the community will be analyzed and the training materials will be established. The project team will create a local core, which it will train in order to activate the community. Thus, 15 people will be selected to participate in the training organized within the project on sustainable development and community organization. After the course, a community organizer will be selected from among the participants. It will coordinate the community activation plan at local level, starting from the environmental problems reported by the community. The plan will be made with the support of the applicant and the partner. The community activation plan will include at least 5 events on environmental issues (creating new selective collection spaces, planting, greening). In total, over 150 people from the community will participate in activities on environmental protection. There will be organized 2 public events, in the presence of the community, media and environmental specialist. The events will mark the launch and the end of the project and will be organized during film screenings, in order to familiarize the community with environmental issues. A total of 10 environmental documentary screenings will be organized, followed by debates with the project team. This will be the first film screenings organized in the village of Chilia.
Summary of project results
The "Green Chilia" project was initiated by the Mai Mult Verde Association in partnership with the newly established Impreuna pentru Chilia Association to address significant environmental challenges in the local community. The primary issues included the poor quality of the local environment and limited community involvement in decision-making processes. The project aimed to improve the local environment and empower residents by involving them in sustainable development efforts and community organization
The project began with a research campaign to identify environmental problems as perceived by the community. A key component was a training session on sustainable development and community organization where 20 local residents participated. From these participants, a community organizer was selected to lead the implementation of the community activation plan. The project team facilitated five community actions, involving over 150 locals in renovating an old park. This included painting street furniture, constructing new wooden infrastructure like gazebos and benches, and installing litter bins and water fountains. Additionally, the project organized 10 environmental documentary screenings for 100 local students, followed by discussions. The project also featured two public events—an opening and a closing event—with over 100 attendees each. To further support the local community, a fundraising and project writing course was held for 9 active members of the local association
The "Green Chilia" project’s success lies in its tangible and intangible impacts on the community. The immediate improvement of the local environment, particularly through the park restoration, has had a lasting effect on the community’s well-being. More importantly, the project empowered the community by involving them in the decision-making process and equipping local leaders with the skills to sustain future initiatives
