Description

The project responds to the low awareness of the consequences of climate change in the Czech Republic and presents the concept of resilience - the ability to deal with the climate change impacts through mitigation and adaptation. At the national level, it launches a society-wide debate on the resilience among experts, academics and public and offers the conclusions to the public media. In regions, it works with selected LAGs - local action groups - and helps them to adopt the concept of resilience into the new strategic plans that are being developed right now. The project pays also big attention to the individual level and presents the topic to the public by means of educational events, workshops and field trips. Examples of good practice and sharing of experiences will be the tools to achieve the results. Pupils and students at secondary schools will be involved by means of a competition which will encourage them to transfer their knowledge to other people in the communities.

Summary of project results

Thanks to this project, the NGO Veronica has contributed to raising awareness of the Czech society in the area of climate change and resilience. “Resilience” means the ability of the society/municipality/individual to cope with the impacts of climate change through mitigation and adaptation. Using specific tools our project contributed to the public’s positive formation and responsibility towards protecting the climate as well as the environment. The debate between academics and experts was supported and conclusions were then disseminated through the media. The most important part of this work was organization of the countrywide seminar “Open space on Local economy and Climate change” at the and of the project. Academics, magistrates, NGO members and independent experts took part on this event. We used the unique experience of the Economy and Society Trust with “open space” tool as the basis to make the debate effective. The concept of resilience was mostly introduced to the stakeholders at regional level by addressing the local action groups in the countryside, however not only in the Zlín region. We offered them step by step expert support to include the climate change mitigation and adaptation measures into their strategies of Community leaded local development. We put a lot of effort in order to show the public how to mitigate climate change and prepare people for its consequences in several areas in daily life. In this puropose we organized several four-weekend workshops as well as a summer school of energy, water and food self-sufficiency, we conducted 6 public debates and 3 field trips to the best examples of good praxis. Primary and high school students in the Zlin province took part in a long term competition called "CO2 league" organized from October 2014 to June 2015. During the competition, school teams worked on 4 tasks connected with the vision of their life in 2040, in the world with a different climate. As a result, we have 23 school teams together with 217 students participated successfully.
